Job Description:
The AB/Deck crew members must be able to live and work for seven days a week in a remote environment. These duties are performed in all weather conditions.
This crew member will perform a host of physical labors in the loading and unloading of cargo and general maintenance on board the vessel. They are a “day worker,” so the hours (with OT) are prolonged and irregular.
They are responsible for releasing and securing of the hatch clamps on all cargo hold covers and may also be asked to operate the hatch crane.
They will perform routine maintenance on the conveyor system. This includes such duties as greasing/oiling the system, replacing bearings, and changing rollers, which entails moving and heavy lifting piece of equipment.
While the ship is underway, the AB/Deck crew member is responsible for general cleaning and maintenance. They will hose down decks, wash cargo holds/bulkheads, as well as painting and chipping.

Job Requirements:
Our able-seamen are members of the United Steelworkers and are hired through the company personnel office.

All Great Lakes unlicensed seamen must meet the following requirements:
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card
- Valid Merchant Mariners Credential issued by the US Coast Guard
- Endorsement as Able-Seaman on MMC
- Current USCG physical examination
- Legally eligible to be employed in the United States (Proof of identity and eligibility will be
required upon employment)
