Job Description:

The Apprentice Tankerman will work in this apprenticeship position for the first year of employment and will work a varying five-day workweek with two scheduled days off per week. This position is an entry level position that will, after a period of training and demonstration of skills, be responsible for the loading and pumping of all liquid cargo barges, transferring other liquid cargos within the liquid product terminals and serve as a shoreside Person-In-Charge (PIC) for tug fueling operations and Tidewater’s Industrial Complex (TIC).

Essential Functions:

Manages self and others in support of safe and incident-free operations. Responsible for knowing and abiding by applicable safety management system policies and procedures.
Safely loads and pumps liquid cargo barges and may transfer liquid cargos within liquid product terminals.
Maintains constant and appropriate communication via radio with dock, vessel personnel and terminal personnel throughout the course of a product transfer.
May perform liquid barge maintenance and housekeeping, as required.
Serves as shore side Person-In-Charge (PIC) for tug fueling operations and Tidewater Industrial Complex (TIC).
Serves as a member of Tidewater’s Spill Response Team.
Responsible for understanding and following all Company work rules, procedures and guidelines.
Represents the Company in a professional manner.
Responsible for regular and prompt attendance as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Required Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.
Two years’ tank barge or petroleum terminal operations experience preferred.
Required Qualifications:

Ability to obtain and maintain valid Coast Guard licenses and documents authorizing Person-In-Charge status for the transfer of petroleum and other dangerous liquids, and to meet any additional standards required by any other authorized regulatory agency.
Knowledgeable of all vessels and procedures to transfer such liquids, including knowledge of piping systems, tankage, gauging devices and inspection and safe handling of hoses and loading spouts.
Ability to be qualified in emergency response and spill procedures.
Must have mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform maintenance and repairs on liquid barge equipment as needed.
Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to resolve issues and interact with personnel at all levels of the organization.
Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) required for maintenance yard location, which may include ear plugs, protective eyewear, goggles, life vest, crush resistant footwear, hard hat, facial respirator, and personal flotation devices.
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Work Identification Credential (TWIC) Card from the Department of Homeland Security.
Ability to qualify as a PIC to operate TIC’s shore side liquid cargo facility.
Must have a valid drivers’ license and an insurable driving record.
Must be available on an on-call basis on nights, weekends and holidays.
Ability to travel to upriver facilities if required (approximately 5%).
Language Skills:

Ability to read, write, verbalize and comprehend instructions and correspondence in the English language.

Mathematical Skills:

Basic mathematical skills to perform essential job functions.

Physical Demands:

Pulls, pushes and/or lifts a variety of equipment and parts requiring forces up to 100 pounds. Lifting may occur in awkward positions while working in cramped quarters.

Environment/Atmospheric Conditions:

Work may be performed in a shop environment and on the dock, tugboats, and barges as job duties require. May be exposed to loud operating machinery, inclement weather conditions, working around water, slip/fall hazards, electrical and mechanical hazards, foreign body hazards, chemicals, vapors, dust, and fumes.

Electric power tools, meters and other tools as needed to perform the essential functions of the position.
