Job Description:

This is a professional state park managerial position that is responsible for the
operational oversight, including supervision and safe operation, of Vermont State Park’s
Island Runner ferry boat, and the well-being of up to 80 passengers, including crew and
park personnel, while in transit between Kill Kare State Park and Burton Island State
Park. Responsible for the supervision of two Island Runner Captains and oversight of
four Deckhand positions, vessel operation, passenger safety, general maintenance, repair,
and upkeep of the 56’ vessel, and providing high levels of customer service. Duties
include scheduling, training, and evaluating staff, coordinating repairs and preventative
maintenance of the vessel, responding to emergencies, maintaining accurate computerized
records, and ensuring Island Runner Ferry and crew remain compliant with United States
Coastguard Regulations during the operating season. This position reports to a regional
operations supervisor for supervision and performance evaluation. In carrying out the duties
of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by all
Vermont State Parks’ policies and procedures, including professional standards of conduct.

Job Requirements:

Considerable knowledge of USCG regulations, safe boating practices, and emergency
operations.
Ability to operate large and small marine vessels and safely dock vessels at docks in all
weather conditions.
Ability to plan, lay out, assign, inspect, train, and supervise the work of captains and
deckhands.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisory staff,
co-workers, vendors, and contractors and work in a team setting.
Demonstrated level of computer proficiency including email, internet, word processing
software, and file storage.
Strong leadership, organization, and decision-making skills.
Excellent customer service skills at all times under pressure.
Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
