Bike Ferry Captain – Colchester, Vermont
Job Description:
The Island Line Bike Ferry is Vermont’s only bike ferry service and one of a few in the entire country. This destination is one of the most scenic in the world, bringing cyclists and pedestrians across “The Cut”, a 200-foot gap on the beautiful Colchester Causeway. With Burlington 10 miles to the south and South Hero 3 miles to the north, the Bike Ferry is the Island Line connection for locals, tourists, and traveling cyclists. The Bike Ferry is a 45-foot pontoon boat designed to carry passengers and bikes.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Coast Guard Certified Captain is in command of the Bike Ferry and its crew and has overall responsibility during the daily shift. The 20-passenger Ferry operates from mid-May to mid-October. Full day shift is 9am to 7pm Fridays and weekends; 9am to 6pm other weekdays. Shifts begin and end at Champlain Marina in Malletts Bay, Colchester..
RESPONSIBILITIES
Captain’s duties include, but are not limited to:
Overall command and safe operation of the 45-foot pontoon boat, ensuring safety of crew and passengers.
Pilot Bike Ferry from Champlain Marina, Colchester to operating location at the Cut on the Colchester Causeway, 3+ miles.
Shuttle up to 20 passengers and bikes/related equipment, on demand, from one side of Cut to the other.
Adherence to legal and company standards with special regard to USCG regulations.
Maintenance of bike ferry pontoon boat in condition of safe operational readiness at all times.
Perform daily checks of fuel and oil levels, to include gas fill-up as necessary
Train and direct staff to maintain high standards of safe operation of the ferry and its systems.
Conduct regular safety drills in accordance with the station bill.
Management of the daily ferry operation, including operational supervision of on-site staff.
Oversee and assist deckhand in safe loading, unloading and transport of ferry passengers, bicycles and related equipment.
Oversee collection of donations, including making the daily bank deposit at the end of daily shift.
Send passenger logs throughout the day and oversee reconciliation of passenger data at the end of day.

Job Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
Valid U.S. Coast Guard license, 25-ton Master or higher
Competent small-boat handler, able to make many landings safely and efficiently
Familiarity with navigation, weather monitoring, radio communications and other generally accepted commercial marine operating policies and procedures
Strong interpersonal and communications skills
Ability to interact positively and patiently with the public and Local Motion employees and volunteers
Team-oriented, displaying a friendly, enthusiastic and helpful demeanor
Ability to assist with loading bikes and trailers up to 70 lbs.
Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Subject to pre-employment and random drug tests, as per U.S. Coast Guard regulations
CPR certification required
Weekend availability
Knowledge of and experience with cycling, regional trails, and recreation opportunities in the Greater Burlington area desirable, not required
Familiarity with performing basic maintenance desirable
