Grand River Navigation began operating in 2000, leasing a barge and purchasing a tug. Since that time, the Company has grown to become the marine transportation provider with the largest fleet operating on the Great Lakes today.
Grand River Navigation operates a fleet of ten self-unloading bulk carriers in the U.S., which includes three articulated tug and barge units. Combined with our Canadian sister company, Lower Lakes Towing Ltd., we have a combined fleet of 16 vessels. These vessels transport a diverse array of dry bulk commodities including limestone, coal, iron ore, salt, grain and other commodities for more than 50 long-standing customers in the construction, electric utility, integrated steel and food industries.
Grand River Navigation is unique on the Great Lakes. In conjunction with Lower Lakes Towing, we operate both U.S. and Canadian flagged vessels. This operating flexibility is a significant advantage as we are the only company in the Great Lakes region providing significant domestic port-to-port services to both Canada and the U.S.
Our Company has openings for the position of Ordinary Seaman aboard onboard our US flagged self-unloading vessels.
Responsibilities include:
– Following safe work procedures, participating in drills and on-going training activities
– Assist with loading and unloading of cargo during operations
– Perform duties in port such as line handling of wire cables
– General vessel maintenance and housekeeping
– Follow instruction from supervisor on various tasks such as cleaning and maintenance

Job Requirements:
REQUIRED to have to apply:
- United States Merchant Mariners Credential issued by the USCG
- TWIC Card - Transportation Worker Identification Credential
- Unexpired US Passport or Enhanced Driver's License and allowed entry into Canada
- Legally authorized to work in the US, without restriction
- Willingness to serve on either a Ship and Articulated Tug / Barge Unit (ATB)
To be successful in this position you must have:
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Be willing to learn and can follow directions.
- Have experience working as a team and a strong desire to working collaboratively with others.
- Maritime training or recent vessel experience preferred.
