The Division
The Operations Division provides leadership related to ministry transportation activities by developing operational policies, providing end-user-focused services for the transportation network, and maintaining and operating assets, infrastructure and services. Our division manages regional corridors, emergency management, maintenance and operations. We also play a pivotal role in building and managing transportation-related stakeholder relationships and partnerships in the province and advocate for regional needs.

What can I expect to do in this role?
Under the supervision of the Ferry Mate, you will:
• assist in the operation and maintenance of a ferry vessel transporting vehicles and passengers
• assist with the loading/unloading of vehicles
• secure and cast-off the vessel
• respond to public inquiries
• ensure vessel and shore facilities are maintained

Please note:
• These positions require working 12-hour shifts days/nights and weekends and meeting the requirements of the Physical Demands Analysis for the position.

Job Requirements:

How do I qualify?
Mandatory:
• The positions require the successful candidates to have a valid class G driver's licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidates providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You are able to write and pass the Marine Emergency Duties Certificate to the level required by Transport Canada.
Technical knowledge and skills:
• You have knowledge of seamanship principles and safe practices and procedures relevant to Marine Operations.
• You have knowledge of routine emergency procedures relevant to Marine Operations.
• You have knowledge about the use and maintenance of lifesaving and firefighting equipment aboard vessels.
• You have the ability to conduct routine maintenance and cleaning of terminal facilities, docks and vessels.
Customer service and communication skills:
• You have proven communication and interpersonal skills to exchange information with passengers and crew.
• You have the ability to provide quality customer service to the public through courteous communication.
Judgement and decision-making abilities:
• You can identify and resolve potentially dangerous emergency or unsafe situations and/or conditions.
• You have awareness of safe working practices and procedures.
• You are able to stop vehicles in parking spaces o that passengers can exit safely.
• You are able to plan and organize daily routine and non-routine activities in a timely manner.
